Teenage son remanded for stabbing mother, elder brother to death

MELAKA: A 17-year-old teenager has been remanded by the police to investigate into the murder of his mother and eldest brother.

Police obtained a seven-day remand order from a magistrate’s court here until June 19.

School teacher Vernita Boon Chew Yen, 51, and her eldest son Jarek Lim Boon Kai, 21, were found dead at home with multiple stab wounds.

They were believed to have been murdered while a 13-year-old boy was seriously injured at their home in Bukit Rambai on June 12.

State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said a team was deployed to the scene after the police received information about the double murder at 6.15 a.m.

The 13-year-old boy, who was injured, was rushed to Melaka Hospital by an ambulance.

The teenager told the police it was a robbery but CCTV footage showed otherwise.

It was reported that initial police investigation revealed that the teenager, the teacher’s second son, had bought a 20 cm folding knife few days earlier.

The police found the knife inside the teenager’s school bag.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Dzulkhairi said resentment was the motive as the second son was often pressured by his mother to revise his study for SPM examination.

The teenager was believed to have planned the attack while the mother was sleeping.

His elder brother attempted to stop him but was stabbed.

The youngest brother, who refused to leave him as instructed, was also stabbed.

Boon was living with her three children in Bukit Rambai. Their father passed away in January this year.

On Friday, Chinese primary school SRK (C) Malim teachers and pupils observed a one-minute silence to mourn Boon’s passing.

The school described Boon, who teaches English, as a dedicated and responsible teacher.

Both Boon and her son will be cremated at Memorial Park Melaka on Sunday.
