KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has no plan to contest in a by-election after quitting Umno.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said he wants to focus on completing his tasks as a minister and a senator.
He has no plan to contest in a by-election, or switch to other parliamentary or state assembly seat.
“I have never said I am keen to contest in elections. These are speculations.
“I resign from my position in Umno not to pursue another high position in the government. Whether a minister or Menteri Besar, or even an advisor, I have never thought of these posts,” he said.
Zafrul said this in a press conference after attending the Regional Socialization of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030 event Thursday.
“I am focusing on my current work in the ministry.
“Secondly, the Prime Minister will decide on my status as minister. I will serve till the last day.
“Thirdly, I plan to serve as a senator until the end of my tenure in December.
“Fourthly, I do not plan to contest in a by-election,” he said.
On May 30, Zafrul Aziz resigned from Umno and announced plans to apply for membership in political ally PKR.
The minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno supreme council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief.
