PETALING JAYA: A Batang Kali landslide victim’s wallet and handphone have been found, says David Ling Mun Siong, husband of the late Liu Pei Si.
Ling said cash and important documents inside the wallet were intact.
The wallet and handphone were kept by the police, said Ling, who lodged a police report after the late wife’s Touch ‘n Go card linked to his e-wallet was used after her tragic death in the landslide on December 16.
Ling could not find Liu’s wallet and handphone kept inside the boot of the car and appealed for the return of the handphone so that he could retrieve precious photos kept in the wife’s phone.
Liu and her teenage son were among those spending their night at the campsite of an organic farm buried by the landslide. A total of 31 people perished in the landslide while 61 were rescued.
The police had since returned the wallet and mobile phone to him and started tracing the suspect using Liu’s Touch ‘n Go card after a police report was lodged.
The suspect’s wife contacted Ling through Facebook but Ling said he decided to let the police handle the investigation.
The police had arrested a civil servant suspected of using Liu’s Touch ‘n Go card kept inside her car.
“The police took swift action to investigate after I provided them the information of the Touch ‘n Go records used to pay toll charges.
“The police acquired the CCTV footage at the toll booths and arrested the suspect.
“I am very happy to recover the wallet and the mobile phone belonging to my late wife,” said Ling.
It was reported that the arrested suspect is a civil servant.
When contacted by Sin Chew Daily, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Datuk Norazam Khamis clarified that the suspect was not a fireman.
