KAJANG: A young baker finally receives a MyKad (identity card) after being stateless for 21 years!

Kenny Hooi Mun Kit, 21, whose ambition is to become a policeman but bakes at home to earn a living as he is without an identity card, can finally start a new chapter in his life.

Accompanied by Balakong state assemblyman Wayne Ong Chun Wei, Hooi collected his MyKad at the National Registration Department office at Putrajaya on Thursday.

He said his wish of receiving a MyKad finally came true.

Instead of baking at home, he can now lead a normal life.

Born in Malaysia, his Malaysian father and mother from China only registered their marriage 15 years after he was born.

He does not have a bank account or a driving licence, and is thus unable to look for a job, even a part-time one.

Unemployed, Hooi has been baking cookies and mooncakes at home to sell since four years ago, a skill he picked up at the age of 13 after completing his primary school studies at a private school.

Hooi’s patrons either pay him in cash or transfer the money online to his father’s bank account.

Without a driving licence, Hooi has to depend on his father to help deliver his cookies to customers, or rely on delivery services.

He started applying for citizenship in 2018 through a DNA test.

He sought help from Ong when the latter was still an aide to Selangor executive councillor Ng Sze Han in 2022.

Ong continued to follow up his case after he was elected the Balakong assemblyman.

“This is the best gift in 2024 for Hooi.

“I m happy for him. He told me he will now be able to work,” said Ong.
