90-year-old lady weaves baskets for charity sale

MELAKA: She may have problem walking, but 90-year-old Chua Moi Chu is busy weaving baskets every day.

Spending two hours a day on weaving baskets, Chua is faster in completing a basket.

She takes about one week to weave a big basket for friends and relatives.

Chua used to be fascinated by woven baskets she saw on television when she was young.

She later collected plastic straps to make small baskets.

Last year, Chua, who lives in Heeren Street, donated 18 baskets for a charity sale organised by Pay Fong Middle School.

This year, she raced against time to weave 27 baskets for the school’s charity sale again.

Chua’s daughter, who works at an electrical shop, brings home plastic straps from the shop, which are normally cut and thrown away after the boxes are opened.

The shop owner is more than willing to give away the plastic straps for Chua to weave baskets.

Chua would clean them and sort the straps according to their colours before she weaves the baskets.

“If the weather is hot, I can’t spend a long time making baskets. If the weather is nice, I can spend longer time weaving a basket,’’ she said.

Chua is grateful that the daughter’s employer is willing to give her the plastic straps. He is careful in cutting the straps to give Chua a longer strap to weave baskets.
