Shortage of Covid-19 self-test kits in Klang Valley

KUALA LUMPUR: The Covid-19 self-test kits are selling out fast in Klang Valley as flu and Covid-19 cases are on the rise.

A check with several pharmacies in Sri Petaling area revealed that the outlets only have limited stock for self-test kits.

Members of the public have also adopted preventive strategies by cutting down on restaurant dining, drinking herbal tea and spending more time at home.

Pharmacists are worried members of the public unaware that they have been infected still do not stay away from the crowd due to the shortage of self-test kits, and this will lead to increasing number of infections.

The Ministry of Health reported a total of 3,626 cases between 19 and 25 November, a surge of 57.3% over the previous week (2,305 cases).

Nearly 98% of infected cases showed only mild symptoms of sore throat and fever. 48% of the cases are aged between 20 and 40.

The Ministry of Health also said Covid-19 cases numbered more than 1,000 each week from 41st to 47th weeks.

Many neither use the self-test kits to check nor report their cases to the Ministry of Health.

Hence, the number of infected cases could be a lot higher than the reported ones.

Besides self-test kits, face masks, flu and fever medications are also selling fast, as many are stocking up supplies at home, said pharmacists.
