PETALING JAYA: The polling day for state elections will likely fall fall on August 12, as the state assemblies of five states – Kelantan, Selangor, Terengganu, Kedah and Penang – have been resolved, according to political scientist Professor Dr. Wong Chin Huat of Sunway University.
The Negeri Sembilan state assembly will dissolve tomorrow.
Elections are to be held within 60 days after the dissolution of state assemblies.
The polling day will take into consideration Muslims returning from their pilgrimage.
Polling day is likely to be on a Saturday as it is a rest day for states led by PAS (Friday and Saturday) and Pakatan Harapan (Saturday and Sunday).
Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub, political analyst from Department of Political Science, Public Administration and Development Studies at Universiti Malaya, said the polling day for the six state elections will likely fall on August 5.
This is because voters have just received their July salaries and would generally feel good, and this is expected to affect their voting behaviors.
“It is also time for those who have left for pilgrimage to return home,” he said.
Dr. Wong said the nomination and polling dates should be fixed in advance for the convenience of the voters, election workers, party workers and the business community.
