Woman told to wear knee-covering pants

KOTA BHARU: The businesswoman who received a compound for wearing short pants inside her shop was told to put on pants long enough to cover her knees.

The woman said the Kota Bharu Municipal Council enforcement officers told her to put on pants which cover her knees.

“Do I have to take the instruction of the council for the length of pants to operate a shop?” she asked.

She said a team of officers came to her shop on Sunday.

They checked her business permit and said it was fine.

However, one of the female enforcement officers said her pants were too short and she should wear pants which are long enough to cover her knees.

She was given a compound under By-Law 34(2)(b) of the council’s Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019, which states that non-Muslims are to be dressed decently.

The woman’s foster father said he would pay the fine.

However, he questioned whether one could wear short pants inside her own shop, as the shop sells various types of short pants.

“I have no intention to go against the council, but I hope the Chinese are given reasonable treatment here,” he said.
