PETALING JAYA: A total of 17 volunteers from Persatuan Amal Setia Gong Xian Zhe KL & Selangor spent half a day with Orang Asli at Kampung Tibang, Ulu Slim, Perak, last Sunday.

Led by the non-profit organization’s founder Stanley Chin, the volunteers cut hair for the Orang Asli, taught the children sing, dance, play games and also Mandarin.

The volunteers also prepared lunch to dine with the Orang Asli.

The group started their journey at 7 a.m. Sunday morning and arrived at the village three hours later.

They brought with them rice, milk powder, Milo, blankets, pillows, bed sheets, mattresses and electrical appliances sponsored by merchants for delivery to some 70 Orang Asli households with about 260 people.

Located deep inside the forest along the Titiwangsa Range in Ulu Slim, the Orang Asli village has no water and power supply, and the inhabitants have to rely on solar power and candles for electricity and lighting.

Chin said each Orang Asli family was distributed with food stuff such as rice, milk powder, Milo, as well as blankets, pillows and others.

Three volunteers who are hairstylists offer free haircut service to the villagers, four volunteers taught the children sing, dance for a quick performance, while another four volunteers prepared lunch for everyone.

Chin said by spending time interacting with the Orang Asli, the volunteers had the opportunity to experience life in an Orang Asli village.

“The Orang Asli do not know how to seek help from the outside world, and by reaching out to them I hope their plight will receive more attention from the public,” he said.

This is the 229th project organized by the non-profit organization based in Sri Petaling.

The group extends help to Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia, B40 families in Klang Valley, as well as foreign workers and refugees in the country with no discrimination against race, religion and politics.

Chin will normally identify those who need help before sourcing the materials from sponsors.

“Our activities are held on Sunday and we have about 50 sessions of activities each year,” said Chin.
