Three women lead Klang Hakka Association

KLANG: For the first time in Malaysia, three women lead the Hakka Association of Klang, including its youth and women’s wings.

Businesswoman Goh Fong Kien is re-elected as the association’s president for a second term, while Ling Wei Jin, also a businesswoman, helms the youth wing and retiree Wong Chong Thai, the women’s wing.

The three women and other committee members took their oaths last Friday during the launch of a commemorative book to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the association which was established in 1972.

Goh was the first woman to have been elected the association’s president in 2020, and this is going to be her second term.

In her speech, Goh said the association would continue to recruit new blood in order to groom successors.

She said the association’s constitution was amended during the annual general meeting held earlier to limit the tenure of president, secretary and treasurer from three terms for a period of nine years to two terms for six years.

“This will allow young people to take over the baton sooner to take the association to new heights,” she said.

The launch of the special book to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the association would enable more young Hakkas to learn about the association’s history, she said.
