KUALA LUMPUR: An old uncle starts his stall selling stinky tofu at 11 pm so that the long queue waiting for the food will not affect the business of shops nearby.
His decision to sell at late hours works out fine for him, although the business hours is past meal time.
The queue starts as early as 9 pm at Jalan 1/27B, Desa Setapak, to wait for the old uncle to arrive in a motorcycle after 10 pm.
The humble uncle who operates the business all alone, said he would sell until the last patron gets his food.
He used to sell until 2 am in the past, but the operating hours is getting longer till 5 am recently as the queue has got longer and longer.
The anonymous uncle, who has been selling stinky tofu for the past 16 years, at times ends the day’s business as late as 5 am to make sure his last patron is served.
The owner of a herbal tea stall next to his said the uncle has been selling until 5 am lately, as some patrons still line up at 4 to buy his stinky tofu, so much so that someone actually posted it on social media, prompting more people to queue late at night.
The herbal stall operator said he normally calls it a day the same time as the uncle.
Located next to Wangsa Maju LRT station, there are many university students staying in Desa Setapak, which is close to UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management & Technology.
A university student identified as Hu said she used to queue for one to two hours to buy stinky tofu.
She said even if she were to arrive at 2 am, there would still be patrons waiting in the line.
A businessman said for him, the uncle’s stinky tofu is the best in Klang Valley, he would not mind waiting for two to three hours in the queue.
