KUALA LUMPUR: As long as the unity government delivers, it may be in power for a period between 10 and 15 years, says DAP vice secretary-general Liew Chin Tong.
Liew, who is also the deputy international trade and industry minister, said the unity government would remain in power if it could set a new political order, forge a Malaysian identity, carry out institutional reforms and fight corruption.
Malaysia has established various political orders under different phases based on the country’s history, he said.
Liew said this during the question and answer session at CITYPlus 2023 Business Outlook Forum in reply to the host’s question how long the unity government would last.
“If the unity government wants to last, it will have to find a clear direction such as a common identity that Malaysians of all races are able to feel that this is the government they want,” he said.
He also said it is important for majority of people to be financially well-off and the economy remains very important.
The unity government must let people feel that this is a prosperous society within five to 10 years.
“We must also deliver in institutional reforms and battle corruption. Then this government will last long,” he said.
Liew also said that now the opponents of unity government are seeking Malay support while the unity government is supported by majority of voters.
If the unity government receives support from voters of all races, then the government will last, he said.
