Three Reformasi stalwarts ousted by voters

PETALING JAYA: Three Reformasi stalwarts — Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua were defeated in the recent 15th general election.

The trio were popularly known due to Reformasi which later saw the formation of Keadilan, later known as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) back in the late 1990s.

They contested in the 15th general election on different tickets, but all lost.

Former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali lost the Gombak parliamentary seat this time.

He quit the party leading to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government through the infamous Sheraton Move.

He was a member of parliament for Gombak since 2008 and lost to his protégé Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Nurul Izzah Anwar, meanwhile, lost the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat previously held by her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim since 1982.

Anwar’s wife Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail contested the seat under Keadilan in 1999 after Anwar was put in jail. Anwar subsequently contested the seat.

Nurul Izzah took over the seat in 2018.

Tian Chua, who shot to fame due to Reformasi, won the Batu parliamentary seat in 2008 and 2013 elections.

He was disqualified during the nomination in 2018 due to a court case.

Tian Chua supported independent candidate P.Prabakaran to win the Batu parliamentary seat.

Prabakaran later joined PKR and defended the seat in this election.

Tian Chua contested Batu parliamentary seat as an independent candidate but lost.
