RAWANG: Election candidates are reaching out to voters in many ways.

In Selayang, the Barisan Nasional candidate from MCA Chan Wun Hoong cooks asam pedas to serve the local folks while incumbent William Leong from PKR (Pakatan Harapan) rides a scooter to visit voters.

The friendly and down-to-earth Chan serves the claypot asam pedas on the table for the locals after cooking the dish in a commercial area opposite the Selayang Municipal Council where the stronghold of Leong is.

In retaliation, Leong visited the Rawang new village, Chan’s birthplace by riding a scooter to distribute fliers.

In just half an hour, with a team of six campaigners, he managed to deliver the fliers to 200 families.

Both candidates are going all out to woo voters with Chan focusing on the Malay area while Leong, the Chinese villages.

Chan told reporters that after chatting with Malay voters, they told him it is time to change an elected representative.

“I promised the voters I would be in Selayang one to two days a week to listen to the problems of local residents, if I win the election,” he said.

Leong, who has insisted to use a scooter to deliver the fliers as part of his campaign strategy, said the scooter is fast and efficient and has brought vibrancy to the new village.

Although some claimed that the Chinese voters have turned cold, Leong said those in new villages gave him a warm welcome and vowed to continue supporting Pakatan Harapan.

The Selayang parliamentary seat will see a five-cornered battle among Chan, Leong, Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari from Perikatan Nasional, Salleh Amiruddin from Gerakan Tanah Air (Pejuang) and independent candidate Muhammad Zaki Omar.
