ALOR SETAR, Feb 17 (Sin Chew Daily) — A couple selling fresh coconuts in Simpang Kuala market offers shoppers free coconuts to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fan Qiang Xi, 53 and wife Gao Bi Yi, 41, give away 200 coconuts to shoppers for three days due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
Fresh coconut water is believed to help reduce one’s body heat
The free coconuts were given to shoppers starting from 7.30am on February 16. A total of 200 coconuts were all snapped up within 30 minutes.
Shoppers maintained social distancing by queuing up neatly to receive the fresh coconuts.
Gao said they have been selling fresh coconuts at the Simpang Kuala market for more than seven years and decided to give away free coconuts due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
The couple lost some relatives to the coronavirus and realized the pain of losing loved ones to the virus.
They hoped everyone would comply with the standard operating procedures in the battle against the COVID-19 virus to ride out the storms.
Besides giving away free coconuts, the couple also distributed Chinese medications Lianhua Qinwen and lung detoxification drink for those in need of such medications.
The couple, from Butterworth, owns a coconut orchard in northern Kedah which also has passion fruits, papayas, soursops and other fruits.
Besides selling fresh coconuts, papayas and passion fruits, they also give away figs and soursops to those in need.
