School cleaner recovers lost salary thanks to honest hawker
Tong returns the envelope with cash to the school in order to trace its owner.

JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 8 (Sin Chew Daily) — A night market hawker who found an envelope with RM600 cash inside decided to return it to SJKC Pei Hwa 2 for the school to locate the owner.

An honest Mr Tong picked up an envelope on the ground with the name of the school written on the envelope when he was packing up at the Permas Jaya night market.

He decided to return the envelope with cash to the school the next day. The school is near to the night market.

SJKC Pei Hwa headmistress Cai Xiu Lian told Sin Chew Daily as the amount of cash inside the envelope was the same as the school cleaner’s salary, she suspected it could be the cleaner who lost the money.

To verify the owner’s identity, the school contacted the outsourced cleaning company and asked the latter to describe the envelope which contained cash.

The person in charge of the cleaning company gave an exact description of the envelope similar to the one picked up by Tong.

The school then invited the cleaner to come to the school without informing her the cash and the envelope.

“When we asked her about her salary, the cleaner burst into tears that she only spent RM20 and lost the entire RM600,” said Cai.

The school returned the envelope to the cleaner and posted the incident on its Facebook to compliment Tong.

“The cleaner is a temporary worker without a stable income. The cash is important to her. We hope to have more honest people like Tong,” said Cai.
