MELAKA, Oct 21 (Sin Chew Daily) — Aid recipients inform Chen Chong Khor Moral Uplifting Society to stop assistance after returning to work.

Datuk Seri Gwee Yew Kiat, chairman of Chen Chong Khor Moral Uplifting Society, said recipients supported by the society during the COVID-19 pandemic took the initiative to inform the society so that the aid could be channeled to others instead.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the society received a drastic increase in the number of applications seeking aid.

The society is now supporting 200 families on monthly basis.

“As the National Recovery Plan has entered the fourth phase in Melaka, some recipients have returned to work and they do not want to continue receiving aid from the society,” he said.

Gwee said starting next month, the society would resume visiting recipients to find out their status.

The society has been sending food and other stuff to the recipients through couriers for those residing outside Melaka Tengah district during to lockdown.

For those residing in Melaka Tengah district, they collected the contributions at the society’s premises at Taman Asean.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the society also contributed laptops to 11 Chinese primary schools and two secondary schools. It has since donated 50 sets of laptops and subsidized tuition fees for the needy.

Gwee said the society would continue offering confirmed COVID-19 patients herbal soup.

The herbal soup has been found to be good for COVID-19 patients in helping them to recover.

Generous people have come forward to sponsor the soup to help others after they have recovered from COVID-19.

The society has not organized fund-raising dinner since last year due to the lockdown.

It has since switched to raising funds online while committee members of the society continue to raise funds for the society, Gwee said.
