As of 8pm, 14 Aug, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has not resigned.
A reliable source told Sin Chew Daily that Muhyiddin did not submit any letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah as rumors went viral on social media that Muhyiddin had tendered a resignation letter to the palace.
Speculation is rife that the King would select a Prime Minister who commands majority support of MPs. The candidate is either Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang MP) or Pakatan Harapan president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the interim Prime Minister.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department ( Special Functions) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof has denied that Muhyiddin would announce resignation after chairing an emergency meeting with ministers and deputy ministers at noon.
He also dismissed rumors that Muhyiddin had signed his resignation letter.
Mohd Redzuan said the Prime Minister had never instructed cabinet ministers to convene emergency meeting on Saturday. He only received notification to attend the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Supreme Council meeting at 9am on Sunday.
"The Prime Minister has not resigned as of today. The so-called emergency meeting of Cabinet minister today is also not true. I am still with my family members at home.
"I receive a notice to attend the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia supreme council meeting on Sunday morning," he said.
Mohd Redzuan told Sinar Harian in order to dismiss speculations on emergency cabinet meeting chaired by Muhyiddin and the Prime Minister would announce his resignation later.
Mohd Redzuan said if Muhyiddin had planned to resign, he would be required to raise the matter in the party meeting. The resignation would be decided by the supreme council of Bersatu then it would be discussed in the cabinet meeting.
On speculations that ministers and deputy ministers were packing, Mohd Redzuan said this did not mean that the cabinet had resolved.
"I can only say I am not sure about ministers' special officers packing up in their respective offices," he said.
Sinar Harian reported that if Muhyiddin were to quit, the palace might set up a National Operations Council (MAGERAN) as the caretaker government.
Sinar Harian learned that Umno leaders such as Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah would then be listed as leaders in the caretaker government.
