PENANG: Collective action is needed from the government, law enforcement, NGOs, education institutions, workplaces and individuals to end sexual harassment.
With the support of laws, justice system and a compassionate community, all members of society are urged to work together to create an environment where sexual harassment is not tolerated and victims are supported.
In a joint statement, the Women’s Right Awareness Association (WRAA) and Sneham Malaysia said action must be taken to reject inappropriate jokes, comments or gestures, even if some find them amusing.
“Let us work together to create a society where everyone feels safe, respected, and protected. Collective vigilance and proactive engagement can turn the tide against sexual harassment, “ said Datuk Seri Chong Eng, founder and advisor of WRAA and Datuk Dr. Florance Sinniah, founder and president of Sneham Malaysia, an NGO set up to prevent suicide in Malaysia.
Sexual harassment remains a pressing issue occurring in public places, government offices, schools, colleges, homes, workplaces, and beyond.
The Anti-Sexual Harassment Act 2022 alone cannot eradicate the deeply rooted problem.
“Its effectiveness depends on the collective awareness, confidence and proactive engagement of every individual.
“ Often, victims are discouraged from speaking out due to fear of retaliation, embarrassment, or concerns about confidentiality. Visual harassment and cases in isolated settings with no witnesses further complicate reporting,’’ the statement said.
Everyone is called upon to play an active role to educate oneself and others on sexual harassment, support victims to report the incidents to relevant authorities and build trust in the system without disclosing the identities of victims.
In addition, children and young people are to be taught about body safety, respecting personal boundaries and recognising unacceptable behaviour.
“At WRAA and Sneham Malaysia, we are dedicated to providing victims with the emotional support they need to begin their healing journey. We also actively organize training sessions, community talks, and awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of recognising, preventing, and addressing sexual harassment.
“Our goal is to foster a society where everyone knows their rights, understands the gravity of harassment, and feels empowered to speak out,’’ the statement said.
