
TAWAU: Sexual harassment cases are up nationwide.
According to figures released by the police, a total of 477 sexual harassment complaints were reported in 2022, increased to 522 in 2023 and 788 last year.
As of March this year, 214 cases were reported.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Dr Joachim Gunasalam, who is also the State Minister of Housing and Local Government, expressed concern over the sharp rise in sexual harassment cases nationwide.
Dr Johachim, who spoke at the closing ceremony of Kembara Kasih Program in Tawau, said the rising number of cases reflected the urgent need for public awareness and stronger support system for the victims.
He also warned that sexual harassment cases could escalate into more serious crimes such as violence against women.
“It can happen to anyone regardless of gender, age, ethnic group and religion,” he said.
Dr Johachim welcomed the introduction of Anti-Sexual Harassment Tribunal (TAGS) by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), offering victims a channel for faster and more affordable alternative to civil courts.
Notices on anti-sexual harassment were also presented to relevant agencies as a sign of the government’s commitment.
Dr Joachim encouraged victims to come forward and seek justice, emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
