PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar is likely going for the deputy presidency in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) election.
Anwar is the PKR president, while Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli is the deputy president after defeating Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in a party election in 2022.
Sin Chew Daily has learned that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has been “advised” not to contest the position after a round of negotiations on Thursday afternoon.
Saifuddin has remained tight-lipped over speculation that he will contest the PKR deputy president’s post.
However, Rafizi, who has announced that he will be defending the post, has yet to nominate himself to defend his post.
Nurul, 45, the former Permatang Pauh member of parliament, is one of the PKR vice presidents by appointment. She is the co-chairperson of the Secretariat of the Special Advisory Body to the Minister of Finance.
It was reported that Selangor PKR, Penang PKR, Melaka PKR, six divisions in Negeri Sembilan PKR, and 13 divisions in Kelantan PKR support Nurul Izzah to run for deputy presidency.
Nurul Izzah said she would make the best decision regarding calls from grassroots members and party leaders to contest the deputy president post in the party elections for the 2025-2028 term.
It was reported that Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim supported Nurul Izzah for PKR deputy presidency, saying her qualifications to helm the post had nothing to do with her father being the party president.
Hassan said he was against nepotism in political parties or government, but Nurul Izzah had proven her mettle, having been part of PKR’s struggle since the age of 18.
Nomination ends at 11.59 pm Friday.
