KUALA LUMPUR: The editorial team of Sin Chew Daily is credited for rectifying the error of a missing crescent moon on Jalur Gemilang on its digital version and tendering an apology immediately after detecting the blunder on 15 April.
The swift action shows that the newspaper is responsible and accountable.
In a statement, the Editors’ Association of Chinese Medium of Malaysia (PACM) called on all parties to be rational over an unintentional error.
“We should support the editorial team which has the courage to own up an error and rectify it immediately after detecting it despite facing immense public pressure,” it said.
PACM extends its support for Editor-in-Chief Chan Aun Kuang, who is also the association’s vice president, and Deputy Chief Sub-Editor Tsai Shwu San, a PACM member, who are facing testing time.
Both Chan and Tsai have been suspended by Sin Chew Daily with immediate effect on 17 April. They were released on police bail on the same day as part of the investigation into the flag blunder.
While PACM understands that His Majesty the King and members of the public may be concerned and unhappy over the incident, all parties should stop amplifying it as the police has stepped in to investigate, said the association.
PACM also reminds journalists to take this as a lesson, and be more cautious in news production and work together to safeguard the dignity of the profession and public trust.
