KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya is inviting Chinese nationals to study at the university through RedNote, a social media app popular among Chinese-speaking young people

The university introduces the campus with Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman featured in a video in which he greets viewers in Chinese “nihao” and “xiexie” (thank you).

In the video, Dr Noor Azuan said Universiti Malaysia has an official account on RedNote where all official information would be posted.

If there are other accounts claiming to represent the university on RedNote, Dr Noor Azuan urges users to ignore them.

He welcomes Chinese students to contact the university through RedNote.

“Welcome to Universiti Malaya. I hope you will join us,” he said.

The university also posts on the social media platform the criteria for a high school graduate to apply for a degree course.

Universiti Malaya’s first overseas branch campus in China’s Shandong Province is scheduled to open next year.

The minimum score required is 520 in China’s high school exam (gaokao), or the students can apply to study at Universiti Malaysia through foundation programme, it said.

It is reported that Universiti Malaya, the oldest and highest ranked university in Malaysia, is setting its first overseas branch campus in Shandong Province, China.

The branch campus is scheduled to open next year.

Prof Noor Azuan said having a branch campus in China allows the university to leverage the country’s economic and technological strengths.

RedNote was founded by Charlwin Mao and Miranda Qu in Shanghai in 2013. It is a lifestyle-focused social media and e-commerce platform widely popular among young consumers in China.

Users frequently visit the platform for travel recommendations, medical advice and tutorials, among others.

The number of its monthly active users reached 300 million in 2024, 38.65 per cent of whom born in the 1990s and 39.21 per cent in the 2000s.
