Putra Heights gas blast site now turns into a small pond

SUBANG JAYA: Firefighters are looking into the gas blast site in Putra Heights which has now transformed into a small pond.

Firefighters, working with technical experts, are attempting to trace the source of water at the site.

Assist Commissioner Khairul Azuwan Ibrahim, the operations commander of Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed that the water-filled crater is the exact location of the natural gas explosion epicentre, where the flames were most intense.

A photograph taken by Sin Chew Daily photographer from an aerial view shows the damaged homes caused by the gas pipeline explosion as well as the water-filled crater.

The police are investigating the explosion from various angles, including whether excavation works carried out by contractors in the area had caused the gas pipe leakage leading to the explosion, said Subang Jaya police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat.

Police confirmed that 41 victims are still receiving treatment at several hospitals following the gas pipeline fire, while 323 victims are placed at Putra Heights Mosque Hall and 70 at MBSJ Multi-Purpose Hall.

It was reported that a total of 235 premises were damaged while and 456 vehicles and motorcycles were affected in the incident.

A Petronas gas pipeline in Putra Heights exploded on Tuesday morning, causing flames to shoot into the sky.

Heat from the flames – visible from kilometres away – was said to have melted plastic and metal within a wide radius of the pipeline.

The fire was reported to have been accompanied by several explosions that shook the ground.

The flames set off fires in several houses as the pipeline is located near residential areas.
