Locals of different faiths throng a Christmas wonderland in Butterworth

BUTTERWORTH: To celebrate Christmas, contractor Charles Dorney and wife Christe Samasundram put up lavish decorations for the house in Teluk Air Tawar in Seberang Perai Utama.

Turning it into a Christmas wonderland with an inflated Santa, snowmen, reindeer, candy canes and all sorts of colourful twinkling decorative lights, the couple’s home is now a local attraction where neighbours bring friends and passers-by to take photographs of the house.

Thanks to a Malay social media user who uploaded a short video clip of the magnificent house on social media, it has now become a Christmas wonderland, generating more than 2.6 million hits.

To share the festive joy, the couple open their doors to greet visitors and deliver candies to children at night after they return from work until midnight.

They have even more visitors during weekends.

Dorney, 52 and Christe, 47, an accountant, did not expect their home to have shot to fame on TikTok.

As the short video of their home went viral on social media, more people turn up at the home to take photos.

“Many praise our Christmas decorations, saying they are even more impressive than those at shopping malls.

“The comments left on social media are supportive and positive,” said Christe.

Dorney has spent close to RM10,000 decorating their home since November with decorative items and accessories bought from the Portuguese Settlement in Melaka.
