PETALING JAYA: In conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2025, the state government has set May until September for Durian Festival, taking cue from Japan’s Sakura Festival in April to promote tourism.
Tourism Selangor will be organising a series of events by partnering with durian orchard owners and those involved in the durian industry to showcase durian tourism to the world.
Chua Yee Ling, manager of Industrial Department of Tourism Selangor, said durian has become an icon offering a fresh image for Malaysia, although the King of Fruits is also grown in neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam.
The experience to taste durians in Malaysia has also become a popular tourism product here.
“In Hong Kong, a four-day-three-night durian tour package to Malaysia is highly popular, as one only needs to take two days off to join the tour,” she said.
Apart from the durian street in SS2, Petaling Jaya, Tourism Selangor is discussing with durian wholesaler Dking to set up stalls at Tourism Selangor’s information centre at Port Klang Cruise Terminal.
Cruise passengers typically have only about eight hours after disembarking at Port Klang, and a trip to KLCC will often end up spending much of the available time on the road due to traffic congestion.
A durian stall selling fresh durians and other durian-related products at Port Klang will allow tourists to savour fresh durians – organic ones, kampung type without wasting time on the road.
Durian Festival is now one of the highlights of Visit Selangor Year 2025 from May to September for Malaysian durians to shine.
