KUANTAN: SJK(C) Jabor, a Chinese primary school 14 kilometres from Kuantan, is offering free transport and meals to pupils in a bid to increase its enrolment.
The school in Kemaman, Terengganu, is not far from Semambu, Air Puteh and Beserah in Kuantan.
Currently, the school has 11 pupils from year one to year six, including four Chinese, six Malays and one Indian.
Founded in 1951, the school is looking at attracting pupils from Kuantan by offering free transportation and meals.
TC Lim, chairman of the school’s board of directors, said the board would arrange for transport for pupils from Semambu, Air Puteh and Beserah in Kuantan, about 20-minute drive from the school.
Besides transportation, pupils’ meals would be covered too, he told Sin Chew Daily.
Although the school is an underpopulated school, it is adequately equipped in terms of facilities, as each class is made up of only two to three pupils except year one and year six.
“The school has a total of eight teachers including headmistress Kam Yeow Leng’
“The pupils are therefore receiving close attention from the teachers,” he said.
The school board currently provides free meals for pupils from year four to year six who are staying back to participate in extracurricular activities three days in a week, he said.
Many Chinese families in Jabor have left their hometown to work in cities. Only senior citizens are staying back.
At this moment the sole Indian pupil in the school is from Beserah, said Lim.
