KANGAR: The Kangar Municipal Council is drafting a new set of regulations requiring business premises to include the Jawi script on new signages starting June this year.

Asrul Aimran Abd Jalil, the state executive councillor in charge of local government, said the new regulation applies to new signages, new business licence applications, and existing shops changing signboards.

However, the new regulation does not include existing signages, he said.

The new regulation is likely to be enforced in June this year, he said after attending the 2024-2025 Perlis Tourism Year at Padang Besar train station on Monday.

“The state is promoting Jawi,” he said.

This is one of the new policies to be implemented by the Perlis state government, announced by Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli last year.

Quoting Mohd Shukri, it was reported last November that Jawi would be included in all new signages.
