SEGAMAT: The Rotary Club of Segamat is offering free lenses for the B40 group in Segamat to undergo cataract surgery.

Tee Piau Teng, 57, president of the Rotacy Club of Segamat, said the club works with the Segamat Hospital to provide lenses free of charge for B40 residents in Segamat in need of cataract surgery.

Tee, a U-mobile agent, decided to start the project after learning from a 60-year-old customer that she deferred the cataract surgery as she could not afford the lenses.

She also had to stop going for dancing in public because of blurred vision.

Through a contact, Tee approached Dr. Zakaria Abdollah, head of ophthalmology unit at Segamat Hospital, to provide free lenses for the B40 group.

The hospital would refer B40 patients in urgent need of cataract surgery to the club, as it takes time applying for lenses under the government’s PeKa B40 scheme.

A B40 patient underwent a cataract surgery at the Segamat Hospital end of November, with lenses provided by the 41-year-old club, Tee said.

A second patient will be undergoing cataract surgery in January, he added.

Donors wishing to contribute lenses to the club can contact Tee at 014-618 8888.
