Compound over short pants settled

KOTA BHARU: A Chinese woman slapped with a compound by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council for wearing short pants in her shop has paid the fine.

Accompanied by the Kelantan Chinese Assembly Hall president Datuk Oie Poh Choon, the woman’s foster father See Yeap Seng paid the RM50 fine on Tuesday.

See, 51, said many politicians contacted him over the incident and offered him to take the matter to court.

However, by settling the compound, See hoped to rest the case.

See Yeap Seng (L1) settles the fine at MPKB in the company of Oie Poh Choon (L2).

“Many are concerned. But I do not wish to politicize this matter. So I opted to settle the fine as a law-abiding citizen,” he explained.

See also said he had no intention to clash with the local council, but hoped that local Chinese would be treated fairly.

He said Muslims and non-Muslims have very different perceptions when it comes to “decent attire.”

On Sunday, a 35-year-old woman in Kota Bahru was slapped with a compound under By-Law 34(2)(b) of the council’s Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019 which states that non-Muslims must be dressed decently.

She was seen wearing a black shirt and a pair of long black pants at her shop on Tuesday.
