Non-Muslim KB businesswoman fined for wearing shorts in her shop

KOTA BHARU: A businesswoman was slapped with a compound by the Kota Bharu Municipal Council for wearing shorts in a shop run by her.

The woman received the compound from the council’s enforcement officer issued under By-Law 34(2)(b) of the council’s Business and Industrial Trade By-Laws 2019, which states that non-Muslims are to be dressed decently.

Wearing a T-shirt and shorts, the woman, who has been selling women’s clothes at the shop for the past two years, said that was the first time she was compounded.

“I am selling women’s clothes and my customers are mainly Chinese women,” she said.

A photograph of an enforcement officer and the woman showed that her T-shirt was covering her short pants.

When asked about the definition of decent dressing, Council president Rosnazli Amin said the matter would be handed over to the secretary of the council to follow up.
