PETALING JAYA: China Daily is using ChatGPT to translate news from Chinese to English with a label to indicate that the articles are translated with assistance from artificial intelligence, says Zhou Li, deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily Group.

Based on his observation, Zhou said ChatGPT is quite accurate and has helped improve work efficiency.

Nevertheless, articles translated by ChatGPT still require human checks.

Zhou Li, who is also the editor-in-chief of China Daily Asia Pacific, led a delegation of five to visit Sin Chew Daily headquarters in Petaling Jaya on Tuesday.

Both media companies exchanged their views on the current status of the media, new technology, online news and future collaboration.

When sharing his experience on using ChatGPT, Zhou said photographers used to encounter difficulty writing captions for their pictures.

The daily is currently letting its photographers use ChatGPT to write the captions before passing them to editors to edit the captions.

It has helped to improve efficiency to write caption.

China Daily started using ChatGPT a month ago with some sections of the newspaper using the system on a trial basis.

“It is a tool which is advanced in some areas. For this reason, we feel that the tool is feasible.

“However, it will also create other problems such as fake news. We have to prevent this from happening. Hence, we are also taking precautionary measures while adopting the technology,” he said.

The editorial delegation is currently visiting several media organizations in Southeast Asia to explore opportunities for collaboration while gauging the new scenario in the post-pandemic era.
