ALOR SETAR: The RM500 incentive for Year One pupils to register at an underpopulated Chinese primary school receives cold response with only one Malay pupil studying at SJK (C) Chee Nan on Jalan Putra.
To attract more parents to send their children to the school, the school board and parent-teacher association have offered a RM500 cash incentive for Year One pupils.
The school currently has a total enrollment of only nine pupils, four Chinese and five Malays.
This is also the first time the number of Malay pupils exceeds Chinese pupils at SJK (C) Chee Nan.
Fliers of RM500 cash incentive have been distributed to local residents in May and November last year, said headmistress Yang Rui Hua.
She said there were several Chinese primary schools with very low student population in the area.
Currently the school has only one pupil in Year One, two in Year Two, one in Year Three, two in Year Five, and three in Year Six.
