PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is pursuing a Master’s degree in prison, says home minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
“He has just signed up for a Master’s program as I was told. We will provide him with the facilities according to the standard operating procedures, such as an advisor for him to complete the studies,” he said during his visit to Sin Chew Daily.
“Najib has decided to make good use of his time in prison,” said Saifuddin.
“Many prisoners complete their Master’s or doctorate programs while serving their sentences in prison. It’s a way to add value for themselves,” he said.
Saifuddin stressed that Najib was not allowed to use a laptop or surf the internet but it is not a problem for his media team to express his views on his behalf.
“He has a media team which just needs a user name and a password to operate,” he said.
On Najib’s response to Facebook posts, Saifuddin said, “There’s no law preventing him from continuing to air his views.
“In the past, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also gave his views while in prison when he was out attending a court hearing.
“The same thing for Najib. We do not stop him from airing his views,” he said.
Najib is currently serving his sentence at Kajang prison.
On July 28, 2020, the former prime minister was convicted on all charges and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment and a fine of RM210 million in the SRC International case.
Last August, the Federal Court affirmed his conviction and sentence in the SRC International case.
