KUALA LUMPUR: According to the information on the Election Commission’s website, once the death of Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Padang Serai Karupaiya Mutusami has been confirmed, the EC secretariat can defer the election for the constituency and set a new date for polling.

Former Malaysian Bar president Yeo Yang Poh told Sin Chew Daily the EC can set new dates for nomination and polling while existing nominees will not need to be nominated again.

When asked whether Parti Keadilan Rakyat can nominate another candidate for the constituency, Yeo said, “Yes.”

He said PKR can nominate a new candidate while any other individual keen to contest can also be nominated.

“As for candidates successfully nominated earlier, they don’t need to be nominated again, but there will not be an election on November 19.”

Padang Serai would have seen a six-cornered fight after the nomination day. Besides Karupaiya, the other candidates are Hamzah Abd Rahman (Pejuang), Datuk Sivaraj Chandran (BN), Datuk Cikgu Azman (PN), Mohd Bakhri Hashim (Warisan) and independent candidate Ananda AK.
