UM student union raises fund for students’ transport home to vote

PETALING JAYA: Through the Higher Education Youth Association, the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union (UMSU) is raising fund to provide transportation for university students to return home to vote.

UMSU president Ooi Guo Shen said the donations would be used to lease buses for university students to return home before the polling day so that they can exercise their rights as citizens.

Based on his observations, many students are keen to vote but can’t afford bus and train fares.

He said in a press conference many students had planned to carpool as bus and train tickets had been sold out, while students from underprivileged families were unable to pay for the transportation.

A student representative from Sarawak said he was disappointed with the expensive airfares from Peninsula Malaysia to East Malaysia, and those from Sabah and Sarawak were unable to fork out the huge sums to exercise their rights on the polling day.

Those keen to support UMSU can contribute to the Higher Education Youth Association (HEYA) bank account:5129-8700-3090 Maybank.
