KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 55 Malaysians, including 15 non-Chinese students, have been awarded scholarships to study at universities in Taiwan this year.

Anne Hung, Representative at Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, said the 15 non-Chinese students are to pursue undergraduate studies, master’s degrees and learn the Chinese language in Taiwan.

Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony, Hung said the scholarships were provided by the Education Ministry of Taiwan.

Six of the scholarship recipients will be pursuing doctorate degrees, 21 master’s programmes and 12 bachelor’s degrees.

Another 16 students will be learning the Chinese language at various Taiwanese universities.

Hung said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia would continue to request for more scholarships for Malaysian students.

The number of scholarships has increased from 20 in 2017 to 39 this year, while scholarships to study Chinese has increased to 16, she said.

“This shows that the government of Taiwan is committed to help Malaysian students and hopes the students will contribute to the society upon their graduation.

“The students are key people in deepening ties between Malaysia and Taiwan,” she added.

Hung also said Taiwan is promoting English and Muslim-friendly environment at universities with a variety of courses offered in English, and the government also gives full support on halal food.

“Chinese and non-Chinese students are welcome to study or learn the Chinese language in Taiwan,” said Hung.
