Independent candidate from MCA family set to face disciplinary action

MELAKA, Nov 9 (Sin Chew Daily) — An independent candidate who is contesting in Duyong state seat in the coming Melaka polls will face disciplinary action from MCA and he will not be getting any vote from his family.

Gan Tian Soh, the younger brother to Kota Melaka MCA chairman Datuk Wira Gan Tian Loo, surprised many by contesting in the state seat as an independent candidate in a six-cornered fight.

Tian Loo said the younger brother, who is an MCA member, would face disciplinary action from the party for violating party constitution.

He said his family would not support Tian Soh by voting for him in the state seat, as Barisan Nasional has fielded a candidate from Umno instead of MCA to contest in Duyong this time, said Tian Loo.

Tian Soh is vying for the Duyong state seat in a six-cornered fight.

The other five contestants are Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem (Umno-BN), Damian Yeo Shen Li (DAP-PH), Datuk Kamarudin Sidek (PAS-PN), Mohd Faizal Amzah (Putra) and Muhamad Hafiz Ishak (Independent).

Tian Loo said MCA and no one from his family were aware that Tian Soh was keen to contest in Duyong state seat.

The entire family was caught by surprise that he contested as an independent candidate.

Tian Loo, who is also a voter in Duyong, said he would not vote for his younger brother, adding that none of his other siblings would do so, too.

Tian Loo has been receiving calls from BN party leaders inquiring about his younger brother’s candidacy in Duyong.

“I do not know why he has decided to contest in Duyong, but I am very sure my family will not vote for him,” he said.

Their father Datuk Wira Gan Boon Leong, who shot to fame for defeating political giant Lim Kit Siang in 1982, was the Duyong state assemblyman from 1995 to 2004 before Tian Loo took over from 2004 until 2013.

Tian Loo lost the Duyong seat to Goh Leong San from DAP in 2013, and the state seat has since gone to DAP.
