RM710,000 raised in 24 hours for Syed Saddiq’s bail

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Sin Chew Daily) — Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who has claimed trial to committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM1 million belonging to his former party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), receives RM715,573.77 from 9,836 donors in 24 hours.

Syed Saddiq thanked donors on his Facebook and ended the crowdfunding on the ground the amount received was sufficient to cover RM330,000 bail.

"I owe my life to Malaysia. I am indebted forever," he wrote.

Syed Saddiq also said he would not stop until a Malaysia where everyone is proud to call home is built.

He also shared that an old man visited his office Friday noon.

He thought the old man was there seeking help but the latter came to donate RM100.

"I was moved to tears. At this moment it reminded me of my reason to join politics," he said.

Syed Saddiq said he joined politics not because of money or status but to help build a developed nation with dignity.

"The more they want to suppress me, the more I will fight. My determination of placing Malaysia as my priority would not be undermined or intimidated by anyone," he wrote.

Syed Saddiq also said he joined politics for the people and the ups and downs in his political career would be determined by the people.

Syed Sadiq, who is Muar MP, was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for CBT concerning an alleged misappropriation of RM1 million belonging to his former party Bersatu.

He could face a maximum jail of ten years, caning, and a fine under Section 406 of the Penal Code, if found guilty.

Syed Saddiq was also charged with misusing a RM120,000 donation for his 2018 general election campaign under section 403 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of six months to five years and caning.
