Thai woman donates bone marrow to save Malaysian leukemia patient

TELUK INTAN, Jan 15 (Sin Chew Daily) — A Thai woman is willing to donate her bone marrow stem cells to save a Malaysian man suffering from fourth stage leukemia.

The 35-year-old Thai woman unknown to Fang Hui Liang is required to take one-week leave from work to have granulocyte colony-stimulating factor injections in hospital in order to stimulate bone marrow stem cells.

Fang, 30, from Langkap, Perak, said he was grateful to this Thai woman and would visit Thailand to thank her personally after his recovery.

Fang was diagnosed to suffer from acute lymphoblastic leukemia on January 3 last year. He had undergone six rounds of chemotherapy.

Fang's bone marrow could no longer produce blood and needed a blood transfusion every two weeks without a bone marrow transplant.

His younger brother's bone marrow was found to be unsuitable for him.

Fang sought help from the a stem cell center in Singapore and the center found him this Thai woman willing to donate her bone marrow.

Having found a compatible donor, he began to raise fund through the social media to pay for his RM190,000 medical bill.

So far, Fang, an insurance agent who has stopped working, has only managed to pooled RM100,000 and is still short of RM90,000.

Ma Guan Xiang, a volunteer in Teluk Intan, accompanied Fang and his mother Ji Xi Zhu to apply for medical fund from Teluk Intan Chinese Associations.
