SIBU, Oct 21 (Sin Chew Daily) – Sarawak deputy chief minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing said despite the coronavirus pandemic, the 12th Sarawak state elections could still proceed through strict adherence to the standard operating procedures.

"COVID-19 is a factor (of consideration), but some other countries have successfully held their elections during the pandemic, including Singapore, South Korea and more recently, New Zealand.

"We have no other options. If we don't do it now, the state assembly will automatically be dissolved when the five-year term expires."

He said he did not know of any other reason that should defer the state elections.
