KUCHING, Oct 16 (Sin Chew Daily) — Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) does not intervene in the power struggle in West Malaysia.

At this stage, GPS stresses that it is supporting Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and also places priority on defending its sovereign right, combating COVID-19 and handling its economy in the state.

All parties have been lobbying for the support of GPS since Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched his move to take over the federal government.

Apart from Anwar, latest updates on the political situation in the country also see Umno veteran leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah a possible candidate for the PM post with the support he garnered from Umno, PAS, Amanah, PKR, Parti Pejuang Tanahair and GPS.

A top leader from GPS who declines to be named told Sin Chew Daily GPS currently neither intervenes nor involves itself in the power struggle among political parties for prime minister's post and federal power.

The anonymous leader said speculations claimed that GPS was in Anwar's list and Tengku Razaleigh's camp.

"These sources have yet to be verified. Political parties in West Malaysia only look for us when they need support. When they do not need our support, they are against us," he said.

For GPS, the priority now is to defend the sovereign right of the state, curb the COVID-19 pandemic and improve its economy.

He said power struggle will only lead to people facing more hardship, adding that political leaders in West Malaysia should place people's interest as priority especially when the COVID-19 pandemic is making a comeback.

"As national leaders, they should resolve issues affecting the people first instead of creating political chaos affecting the national economy and people's lives," he said.
