Law professor: no outcome tomorrow for Anwar’s royal audience

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Sin Chew Daily) – International Islamic University law professor Dr Nik Ahmad Kamal Nik Mahmod said even if opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong tomorrow to convincingly prove that he has the support of majority of Members of Parliament to form the new government, there would not be an immediate outcome.

Nik Ahmad told Sin Chew Daily this is because His Majesty needs time to listen to the views of prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin is currently on home quarantine until October 16.

Nik Ahmad said the prime minister can also produce evidence to the King that he has the majority support in the Parliament in a bid to refute Anwar's claim

"If Anwar has substantial proof that he has the support of majority of MPs in Dewan Rakyat, PM Muhyiddin has the right to advise the King to dissolve the Parliament.

"His Majesty has the right to decide whether to dissolve the Parliament or appoint a new prime minister."

During an interview with Sin Chew Daily, Nik Ahmad said he believed Anwar would convince the King that he has the majority support, but he must provide substantial evidence.

Additionally, he said the King also has the right to convene a Conference of Rulers to discuss this matter.

"As such, there will not be an outcome tomorrow.

"The entire process will need some time."
