KULAI: Age is just a number for 91-year-old Yow Boon Huat and his 84-year-old wife Neo Beck Oun, who teach seniors aged 65 and above Tai Chi in the morning.

Led by Yow and Neo, about 30 seniors practice Tai Chi—move their postures gracefully, inhale and exhale in rhythm—at the basketball court on Jalan Sultanah, Kulai.

Yow told Sin Chew Daily that ever since he retired in 1996, he and his wife began practicing Tai Chi—including Tai Chi, Tai Chi fitness routines, and traditional Tai Chi styles.

The couple has even participated in multiple competitions, consistently earning awards.

He explained that for him, Tai Chi is more than just a physical exercise—it embodies a life philosophy.

Over the past 30 years, they have learned while teaching, sharing their passion with interested neighbors and practicing together.

“Previously, the person in charge of operating the sound system collected a token fee of RM2 per person to cover battery costs.

“Nowadays, we’ve purchased a rechargeable speaker. Moreover, after the Movement Control Order, we relocated our practice sessions to the basketball court in front of my house—free of charge—so we no longer collect any fees.

“Our aim is simple: to encourage everyone to exercise and stay healthy together,” said Yow.

Except on Sundays, the group gathers punctually at 7:30 a.m. daily for an hour-long session, after which members often head out together for tea and breakfast.

“After practicing, we sometimes go for tea and breakfast. We’re all together—happy and cheerful!” he said.

Yow emphasized that practicing Tai Chi not only strengthens the body but also fosters emotional bonds among neighbors.

When asked about his secret to stay healthy, he chuckled, saying it’s simply “movement” and “joy.”

In addition to morning Tai Chi, he takes walks after dinner.

Yow welcomes anyone interested to join them early in the morning at the basketball court for some gentle exercise.

“We not only stay active ourselves—we also inspire others.

“Seeing everyone healthy and happy gives me the greatest satisfaction.

“Beyond daily practice, we also gather to celebrate during Chinese New Year and other festive occasions, just like one big family,” he said.

His wife Neo added that her favorite part of each day is the Tai Chi session in the morning.

Through this activity, she has made many friends.

“No matter how old you are, you’re always welcome to join us.

“Practicing together, moving together—the most important thing is to feel happy and relaxed.”
