Parents of Malay students in Kedah SJKCs say ‘no’ to Jawi

SUNGAI PETANI, Jan 15 (Sin Chew Daily) — SJKC Kong Min in Tawar, Baling, which does not have a single Chinese student in Year Four, and SJKC Seng Yok in Kupang with over 90% Malay students, have both rejected the teaching of Jawi calligraphy at their schools.

The vice president of the Association of Chinese School Management Boards of Kedah confirmed with Sin Chew Daily during a telephone interview that all the parents of four Year 4  Malay students at SJKC Kong Min, and three Malay, three Siamese and one Chinese students at Seng Yok said "no" to the teaching of Jawi calligraphy at their schools.

"From what I understand, the school management boards and PTAs of both schools do not agree to the inclusion of Jawi in the BM curriculum. It is fortunate that the parents of Malay students are standing on the same side as them.

"We don't actually reject the learning of any traditional calligraphy, including Jawi, but we are concerned about the untold agenda behind the teaching of Jawi as part of the BM curriculum."
