Volunteers celebrate centenarian’s birthday at old folks’ home

SUBANG JAYA: A group of volunteers has organized a birthday party for a centenarian at an old folks’ home in USJ 2, Subang.

The Kangen Power Team volunteers, 22 of them, brought noodles, red eggs, fried chicken and a cake with them to celebrate Chin Moo Yin’s 100th birthday at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Orang Tua Yi Xing.

The volunteers visited the home during Chinese New Year and learned about Chin’s birthday on March 29, 1923.

They then planned a birthday celebration for her, which would be the 119th monthly charity event the group organized.

The birthday party brought cheers to the home.

Chin was sent to the home about a year ago from a nursing home in Petaling Jaya.

While Chin may not be able to recall her life, she remembered raising her three sons and three daughters on her own after her husband was killed in a road accident.

Chin, an illiterate, said she was a rubber tapper in Puchong raising her children, who are now in Australia.

Steven Gee, the person-in-charge at Yi Xing, said Chin is the oldest resident at the home.

He said Chin is healthy and only takes medication for diabetes. She can still walk using a walker.

Gee said he met a man said to be Chin’s son who came to offer RM300 as subsidy for the home to hire domestic helpers.

The home does not charge senior citizens but only receive contributions to pay for domestic helpers, depending on one’s financial capability.

The home currently has a total of 24 residents and four workers.
