(Bahau) An under-populated Chinese primary school is offering cash aid and tuition for non-Chinese pupils in its bid to increase the number of pupils.
SJKC Ladang Glendale, a Chinese primary school once located in the estate and relocated to a Chinese village in Ayer Hitam in 1995, has a total of 23 pupils now.
Of the 23, 18 are Chinese, three are Malays and two are Indians.
This year, the school does not have pupils for year one, 28 years after it was relocated from an estate to Ayer Hitam, a Chinese village in Jempol.
It used to have a good number of pupils studying in the school after the relocation but in recent years, many young people have moved out from Chinese village for better jobs.
In addition, a Chinese kindergarten in the area , where many non-Chinese parents used to send their children to the kindergarten before attending SJKC Ladang Glendale, also shutdown.
To encourage more non-Chinese pupils study in the school, Chia Poun Tong, chairman of the school board, said the school offers RM500 cash aid for non-Chinese pupil to start year one in the school.
Without the Chinese kindergarten, the school also pays RM100 per month for the non-Chinese pupils to go for tuition in order to cope with the studies in Chinese primary school.
He said the existing on-Chinese pupils in the school started to learn Chinese at the kindergarten which has just shutdown.
Since then, the number of non-Chinese pupils also dropped.
