PETALING JAYA, Oct 8 (Sin Chew Daily) — A Malay man sings the famous Cantonese song Shanghai Bund to cheer up his Chinese roommate at the hospital ward.
A Chinese woman from Kedah identified as Ivy Neoh uploaded a video clip on TikTok showing the Malay man next to her father in the hospital ward singing the popular Cantonese song to cheer him up.
Neoh wrote that she was glad to see Malaysians from different ethnic groups could live in harmony.
She was grateful to the Malay man who had entertained her father with the Cantonese song.
Neoh’s father was admitted to Kedah Medical Center on September 8 for medical treatment and the Malay man was in the same ward with her father.
“The pakcik told me he used to watch Chinese movies aired on TV and loved Chinese oldies too.
“My father was happy to hear that and they became friends in the hospital,” said Neoh.
After the video was circulated on social media, the Malay man’s son identified the father and left the comment that his father was hospitalized after being involved in a road accident.
Both Neoh and the Malay man’s son exchanged messages sending regards to their fathers respectively.
Many Malay netizens recalled the Hong Kong movies and TV series in the 90s after watching the video clip.
Some commented that many Malays could actually sang Cantonese songs back in those days.
Both men had since been discharged from the hospital.
Neoh said she was moved by the fact that the Malay man came over to his father’s bed to wish him all the best on the day he was discharged from the hospital.
“He told my father he would pray every day for him to have a speedy recovery,” Neoh said.
Both of them exchanged their contact numbers and have since been keeping in touch, she said.
