History-making liver transplants in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (Sin Chew Daily) -- Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) collaborates with Renji Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiatong University to perform liver transplants on two young children for the first time. The donors are the parents of the children and they are currently in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

In the past, children suffering from chronic liver disease undergo liver transplant in overseas. Since UMMC and Renji Hospital signed strategic collaborative agreement, a total of 16 Malaysian doctors were sent to Shanghai for training. Now they performed liver transplant in the country for children.

Chen Wei, wife of Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian, said the deep friendship between the two countries is reflected on human relationships. A good example is the collaboration between Renji Hospital and UMMC which offers Malaysia technical skill on liver transplant.

“We are good neighbors, good friends and good sisters and brothers. We should help each other when one is in need,’’ she said.

In her speech, she said the collaboration bring hope to the parents and they do not take their children to undergo treatment in foreign countries.

“For the parents, their child is everything. I am also a mother. I can understand the feelings of the parents and their helplessness when their children are down with liver disease,’’ she said.

Prof Xia Qiang, vice-president and head of liver surgery at Renji Hospital said since 2014, a total of 38 Malaysian children underwent liver transplant in the hospital in Shanghai.

“With collaboration between UMMC and Renji Hospital which has been successful in the latest liver transplant, I look forward to both hospitals embarking on closer collaboration to offer patients better transplant service,’’ he said.

Sin Chew Media Group and Sin Chew Daily Foundation donated RM500,000 (US$119,331.74) to sponsor UMMC set up medical team focusing on living-related liver transplant in 2015.
