KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee will be released on police bail on Thursday.

The extended remand order obtained by the police to investigate into the death of female Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh who was last seen with Wee, expires on Nov 13.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said no evidence was found to link Wee, 42, involved in the death of Hsieh.

“Investigation is still ongoing. Instructions have been given for further investigations,’’ he said.

The sudden death of Hsieh, also known as “Nurse Goddess,” has been reclassified as murder.

Hsieh, 31, was found dead in a bathtub inside the hotel room on Oct 22.

Wee was the last person with Hsieh and the police believed he had connections with the case.

Wee claimed that Hsieh and him were working together on a video project and had discussions in the hotel room throughout the night.

Wee is often embroiled in controversy since he left school.

In 2007, his video “Negarakuku”, which went viral, sparked controversy over its lyrics and the politics in Malaysia.

He was detained by police in 2018 to facilitate investigations into his music video Like a Dog.

He was also banned by China in 2021 for producing a song – Fragile, which satirizes the social issues in China and the political status of Taiwan.

His music often stirs controversy by focusing on and satirizing sensitive topics in society and politics, which leads to multiple legal issues for him.
